Passion Horse Ranch and Rescue is hosting a Poker Ride on Saturday evening, August 28th from 6-9pm at Rancho La Rosa!! Rancho la Rosa is located in Alvarado, TX, and it's a beautiful facility. (www.rancholarosa.org)
The cost is $20 per person, and that includes the game, dinner, and music. Pre-registration will be required. To register, visit Passion Horse Ranch's web site www.passionhorse.com,click on the link for the Poker Run, and use Paypal to register. Please, if you are planning on attending, register early so they know how much food to make. There will be two seperate games running; one on horseback, and one on foot. Prizes will be awarded to the best 3 hands from each category. In case you don't know what a Poker Ride entails, essentially, it's a one hour trail ride with 5 stops along the way. You are dealt a card at each of the 5 locations, and you "play" poker at the end of the ride.
Dinner will be provided as well as cold drinks. Michelle Garrison will be entertaining after the ride, with some of her own original music as well as some old familiar tunes.
All proceeds earned from this event will be earmarked for the Annual PMU rescue. Passion Horse exists because of the PMU babies. There are thousands of babies born every year to an industry that are considers them a "by-product" of the Premarin industry. These babies are weaned and sent to feedlots to be fattened up for human consumption overseas.
Passion Horse fundraises all year to save as many of these poor, voiceless foals as we can. This year things are different. The drug company (Wyeth) that owns all the contracts to the "pee farms", has forbidden the ranches to sell directly to rescues. They believe that by allowing the foals to be sold to rescues, implies that the foals need rescuing in the first place and that generatres bad publicity for them.
This year, the babies are all being rounded up and sent to various sale barns around the country to be sold to the highest bidder. The closest one to Texas is going to be in Missouri on Sept 17th. Passion Horse will be there!! We will be bidding against feedlots, kill buyers, and also some private indivduals. It is estimated that these foals will be selling in the $1000-$1200 range.
Passion Horse would like to save at least 6 babies this year. They will all be good quality Clydesdale crosses. If you are interested in pre-purchasing a baby, or want to know more about Premarin, the PMU industry, how to help, or you want to make a donation, please call me at 817-565-5678, or Deb Naismith (the owner of Passion Horse) at 817-372-0047.
